When things go poorly for a barbarian army, they’ve nothing to do but run.” He nodded his head, and gave the men a knowing look. “So that shovel,” Vatinius shouted, “not the spear or the short sword, as you’ve probably heard—but the shovel strapped to your backs is the real reason for the success of the Roman army.” He smiled to himself, pleased with his speech.
