The debate between desktops and notebooks has not really been resolved.  While the most recent models of the notebook are being fitted with the capabilities of a desktop computer, desktops are meeting this challenge with their own improvements.  When the internet technology was just barely reaching the public sphere, telephone lines were the only means to connect.  In this regard, desktop computers were most often used as graphical interface to reach large server data.  The tide was turned in just a few years after when wireless internet connection was introduced, however.  It meant internet capability for the notebooks where ever they were.
