Judging by their recent slate of ads, both Dish Network and Direct TV have come to the conclusion that the thing that’s going to separate them from each other, and maybe even to a greater extent from their archrival cable TV, is going to be who leads the pack in HD programming.

There’s a definite Dish Network vs Direct TV arms race brewing in the HD arena. Those paying attention should have spotted this a few months ago, when the TV spots we saw started shifting away from vacant ads with celebrities to touting which service offered more HD programming and which has better quality picture and sound. The jury is still out on all these questions, but the mere fact that we’re asking them shows where the new battleground truly is.
