When a person buys a shared hosting service, he or she is basically just buying a virtual server where multiple dozens of people are using the same service.  This can cause slow down in web pages hosted on that server.  A dedicated hosting server, on the other hand, is leased to a specific person for his or her exclusive use only.  Because of this, web pages on this kind of server tend to run faster than on a shared hosting server.  Using a dedicated server also means that the company that owns the server hardware are responsible for performing hardware maintenance, instead of the person the server was leased to.
