Don’t be afraid as a beginner to use a cheap golf ball.  You will find as you learn the sport that you will go through a great many golf balls.  After you learn to play some and learn the scoring, you can always switch to the better balls.  You can even move up to custom-designed balls to play with and show off to your golf friends.  But in the beginning it is best to stick with a cheap golf ball since you will find that you are losing quite a few on the greens.
