Radiation therapy and prostate Surgery are the main types of prostate cancer treatment. Several factors influence the type of prostate treatment given to a patient such as the stage of cancer, a patient’s age and whether the the disease is new who is recurrent.

Radiation therapy is a prostate cancer treatment that is used to eradicate the cancer cells and eliminate pain. In external beam radiation, x-ray beams or protons are aimed at the cancer from the bodies’ exterior. Prostate brachytherapy is a minimally invasive form of radiation. This type of prostate treatment is performed by planting tiny seeds that contain radioactive materials inside the cancer or in proximity it.

prostate surgery is a prostate treatment that may be used to remove the prostate and any cell tissue that is in proximity. This can be performed as open incisions made to the abdomen or perineum or as laporoscopy surgery where tiny incisions are made in the abdomen. Prostate Surgery may also be needed to perform a lymph node biopsy where the lymph nodes in the nearby area are examined to see if the cancer has spread. Problems with urination caused by a tumor pressing the urethra can be corrected with prostate Surgery as well.

Research is being done to discover new prostate cancer treatment methods. Patients may opt to participate in clinical trials to see if these new treatment choices will be effective for them.
