The Link Between Heartburn And Hiccups
July 30th, 2008 . by adminAre hiccups and heartburn linked? Very little evidence seems to suggest that there is a link between hiccups and heartburn. Hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm, affecting primarily the left side. Hiccups occur in the fetus and the normal rate in people varies between four and sixty times per minute. Heartburn is a searing pain in the chest area arising from regurgitation of stomach acids. The abdominal sphincter is impaired and acids seep into the esophagus. If hiccups and heartburn happen at the same time there is more force to push the stomach contents into the throat. Rarely is medical advice sought for hiccups. Heartburn persisting more than twice a week should be examined by a health care evaluator. Most cases, though, involving hiccups and heartburn are medical emergencies and treatment should be sought.
