do our brains determine whether or not we become drug addicts?

Do our brains determine whether or not we become drug addicts?  There has been much speculation as to whether or not this is true.  While it may be easy for some to hypothesize that our brains do, in fact, play a key role in determining whether or not we will develop addictive habits, there seems to be no real conclusive evidence as of yet to definitively say whether or not this is actually true.  Many drug and/or alcohol addicts will tell others that their addiciton is the result of some sort of genetic deficiency due to their family problems and/or history.  However, how can we be sure as to whether or not they can pin down a cause.  There are many who say that they can figure out what their problems are by looking at their parents, but this is not an excuse.
