Green Card Renewal

August 6th, 2009 . by admin

A Green Card is a permanent residence card, issued by the US government that allows all foreign nationals to live and work in US.  This card has to be periodically renewed as it is issued only for a period of ten years and the date of expiry is given on the front of the card. The procedure for green card renewal is very simple and straightforward but is absolutely necessary.

It is advisable that you begin the process for green card renewal at least six months prior to its expiry and try not to travel abroad during that period. For green card renewal, you have to fill up form I-90, prescribed by the USCIS, which can be ordered through phone or mail or online. You have to submit the form in person to the USCIS office or sub office, whichever is closest to you and pay the requisite fee. When you go to submit your form for green card renewal, make sure you carry your passport or at least a photograph, so that the USCIS can provide you with a temporary proof of residence status that is valid for one year. Green card renewals are normally processed within a period of 10 months to one year. During this period, the temporary proof of residence status will act as your Green Card.

While Green card renewal is not mandatory and can be done even after expiry, it is best to get it renewed before expiry so as to enjoy the rights conferred by it without any interruptions.

You cannot, since the card specifically says "tribute summon" and not "tribute set"
