You may need to obtain the advice of a good Birmingham accountant but, if you work for someone else, your employer may provide you with extra perks or benefits.  When these benefits are added onto your salary they make up your total employment package.  These extras or perks of the job, may include the likes of private medical insurance, company cars, and even the Christmas office party.  All of these perks are non-cash, and do not come through your pay packet, and are technically known as benefits-in-kind.  Some of these perks are taxable, meaning that you will have to pay income tax on them.  Some are tax-free, and some you will need to pay national insurance contributions on, so things can tend to get very complicated when it comes to paying the tax man.
